Why do my white coffee mugs get gray inside after being washed in the dishwasher?

When I take them out of the dishwasher, there is gray dirt or residue inside at and near the bottom the mugs. Other white things – dishes and bowls – don’t have this. Is it something to do with coffee?
When I look at the inside of the coffee mugs, it seems as if the finish is wearing off and some gray material is showing through. The gray can be scraped off, so I don’t think the mugs are safe anymore.
